IRON TRAILS, GEOPOLITICAL RIVALRY: THE CONSTRUCTION OF RAILWAYS IN TURKESTAN AND THE ROLE OF THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE AS AN OBSERVER IN TURKESTAN

Abstract

This article examines the railway construction implemented by the Russian Empire in Turkestan during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, exploring its military, economic, and geopolitical objectives, as well as the Ottoman Empire’s strategic reaction. The dispatch of Major Bahauddin Bey to the region highlights the Ottoman observational role in Central Asian politics. The paper relies on archival documents, diplomatic correspondences, and press sources, applying a historical-descriptive analytical approach.
