THE MASTER–APPRENTICE SYSTEM AND THE SOCIAL TRADITIONS OF THE ARTISAN COMMUNITY IN THE RISHTON POTTERY SCHOOL

This article analyzes the master–apprentice system formed in the Rishton pottery school, as well as the social and ritual traditions of the potters’ community, based on historical and ethnographic materials. The study examines the criteria for selecting apprentices, the stages of vocational training, the authorization granted by the master, as well as the professional rituals and belief systems practiced within the potters’ community. It also explores the rituals related to the cult of the patron saint (pir) that united the artisan community and the traditions that strengthened professional solidarity. The research findings contribute to identifying the social mechanisms of transmitting professional knowledge and experience in Rishton pottery.
