Abstract

The article analyzes the evolution of approaches to religious issues under the conditions of the “Perestroika” reforms implemented by the Soviet government in the second half of the 1980s. The author focuses on the conflict between local Islamic traditions in Central Asia and radical ideas introduced from outside the region. The study reveals the genesis of the “Mujaddidiya” and “Ahl al-Sunna” movements formed in the Fergana Valley, as well as new groups that emerged under the influence of Salafism.
