The article reveals the complex social functions of social memory, which transmit the historical experience, values, traditions and knowledge of society from generation to generation, and its role and significance in the process of remembering the past, as well as its understanding, interpretation and adaptation to the needs of the present. This concept has been formed throughout the development of mankind and has acquired different meanings in different periods. This article analyzes the essence of the concept of social memory, the process of its formation (genesis) and the stages of historical development (evolution). It also sheds light on the role of social memory in the life of society and its impact on cultural and spiritual development on a scientific basis.
