SOME REFLECTIONS ON THE HISTORIOGRAPHY OF THE “BABURNAMA”

This article is devoted to a historiographic analysis of the Baburnama as a written source on the history of Timurid institutions. The aim of the study is to systematize the main stages, regional traditions, and areas of study of the work, as well as to assess its source study potential for the reconstruction of Timurid statehood. Historiographic, problem-chronological, comparative historical, and source study methods are used. Four stages of Baburnama study (16th–18th, 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries) are identified, and the main research traditions are characterized. It is established that from an early period the work was perceived not only as a memoir but also as a political and normative text. Unresolved issues of its genre identification, authorial subjectivity, and the lack of a full-fledged critical edition of the Chagatai text are identified. A conclusion is drawn regarding the high potential of the Baburnama for the institutional reconstruction of the Timurid dynasty and the need for its systematic comparison with parallel sources.
