This article presents a semantic analysis of some phraseological units found in Yusuf Khass Hajib’s Kutadgu Bilig. The study aims to identify the meaning layers, sources of imagery, and contextual functions of these fixed expressions within the didactic-poetic fabric of the text. The methodology combines semantic-field grouping, contextual interpretation, and conceptual metaphor analysis. The results indicate that phraseological units serve as key mechanisms of semantic compression: they transform ethical and religious ideas into memorable formulas, intensify rhetorical impact, and contribute to the legitimization of social and political norms. The findings also show that recurrent expressions systematically model core concepts such as “speech and restraint,” “knowledge and intellect,” and “time and transience,” thereby linking individual episodes to the broader worldview encoded in the work.
