A LINGUISTIC, STRUCTURAL, AND CULTURAL COMPARATIVE STUDY OF ENGLISH AND UZBEK PAREMIOLOGICAL UNITS IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF STUDENTS' LEXICAL COMPETENCE

Gulrukh Bakhodirovna Rajapova ,

Abstract

This article is devoted to a comparative analysis of teaching English and Uzbek proverbs and sayings, examining their linguistic, structural, and cultural characteristics. Proverbs are concise and expressive manifestations of folk wisdom that reflect the worldview, values, and cultural identity of a nation. The aim of the study is to identify the similarities and differences between the paremiological units of the two languages, classify them from thematic, structural, and pragmatic perspectives, and develop practical methodological recommendations for learners of English and Uzbek. The research employs comparative-typological and contextual analysis methods. The empirical material consists of more than 200 paremiological units selected from the Little Oxford Dictionary of Proverbs (2016) and academic collections of Uzbek folk proverbs. The findings reveal that the proverbs can be categorized into full equivalents, partial semantic equivalents, functional equivalents, and culture-specific (non-equivalent) units. While English proverbs predominantly reflect pragmatism, individualism, and rationalism, Uzbek proverbs emphasize collectivism, family values, and hospitality. Structural analysis demonstrates that both languages share features such as parallelism and rhythmic balance. The study concludes that proverbs are not merely linguistic units but also cultural codes that preserve national identity and transmit it from one generation to another.
