Drawing on the novels Muvozanat by U. Hamdam and Boqiy darbadar by Isajon Sulton, the paper identifies the emotional dominants of Uzbek prose of the independence period. A four-criterion procedure is applied in which frequency is counted functionally, by the rule of emotional behaviour being realized rather than by the presence of a lexeme. The concepts sabr, andisha, or-nomus and armon are recognized as dominants. All four belong to the ethical-regulative type. They prescribe a norm of handling an experience and therefore act in the text as a principle of plot construction rather than an object of depiction. The lower density of direct psychological description in Uzbek prose is shown to result from symbolic-parabolic and etiquette-formulaic verbalization rather than from weak psychologism. Compared with Russian dominants, an inversion of the opposition guilt versus shame is established.
