GENDER-SENSITIVE JOURNALISM IN THE CIS COUNTRIES: FEATURES OF FORMATION AND CURRENT DEVELOPMENT TRENDS

Oisha Zakirova ,

Abstract

The article examines the formation and current development trends of gender-sensitive journalism in the Commonwealth of Independent States through a comparative-analytical approach. It synthesises the gender-equality and domestic-violence legislation of Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Russia, international monitoring reports and regional content-analysis studies. The quantitative and thematic asymmetry of women's representation in the media, the influence of legal differences on journalistic framing and the problem of online harassment of women journalists in the digital environment are analysed. The study argues that, because Uzbek has no grammatical gender, gender stereotypes in Uzbek-language media operate at the lexical and phraseological level. Drawing on UNESCO's Gender-Sensitive Indicators for Media, a four-level model of gender sensitivity in editorial practice is proposed. Practical recommendations for the media of Uzbekistan cover a style guide, internal monitoring, a training module and protocols against online harassment.
