
US HUMAN RIGHTS AND DEMOCRACY STRATEGY

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) promoted political freedom as an integral part of development, and this process continues today. It also recognizes that support for democracy, human rights, and governance is essential to the pursuit of freedom and national security, and to the broader social and economic development goals of the United States Agency for International Development () and the US government.

The United States has signed and ratified both treaties. The latter is a supplement to the U.N. Convention against Transnational Organized Crime.
The United States has signed but not ratified the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights (signed in 1977), the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (1980), the Convention on the Rights of the Child (1995), and the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (2009). The United States has neither signed nor ratified the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families and the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance.
