This article analyzes the stages of formation of literary criticism and literary studies in Uzbek literature, as well as their role and significance in the development of artistic and aesthetic thought. The critical views in the works of classical writers such as Alisher Navoi and Zahiriddin Muhammad Babur, as well as the literary-critical heritage of Fitrat, Abdulla Qodiriy, Cho‘lpon, Oybek, Abdulla Qahhor, and Ozod Sharafiddinov, are examined to reveal the essence and function of “ilm al-naqd” (the science of criticism). The article discusses the role of criticism in literature, its function in shaping the creative personality, and its importance in the development of national thought and spirituality.
