The article discusses the foundations of the ideographic representation of the phraseological system of the Russian language. The key stages of a project devoted to the fundamental study of Russian phraseology are presented. One of the phases of this project was the creation of thesaurus-type dictionaries of Russian idioms. Various aspects of the developed thesaurus descriptions are examined, and it is emphasized that a thesaurus functions as one type of semantic network. A more comprehensive lexicographic description must take into account the full variety of connections that exist between phraseological units both as elements of the language and as elements of speech.
