THE ORIGINS OF THE FORMATION OF THE REALISTIC SHORT STORY IN CONTEMPORARY KUWAITI PROSE

Shakhlo Irgashbaevna Akhmedova ,

Abstract

This article analyzes the formation and development of the modern short story genre in Kuwait during the 20th century. It discusses the history of Kuwaiti literature, the creative achievements of writers, and the evolution of the genre. Kuwaiti short story writing, which began with the publication of the story “Munira” in 1929, continued to develop from the 1940s under the influence of modernism and realism. In the 1940s–1960s, under the influence of Egyptian literature and Arab literary criticism, particular attention was paid to social issues and women’s themes. In the 1960s–1970s, writers portrayed transformations in Kuwaiti society through new methods and themes, including social reforms, attitudes toward modernization, and psychological states. In the 1980s–1990s, greater emphasis was placed on the enrichment of genre forms and imagery, as well as on the artistic analysis of social contradictions. The article also examines the synthesis of realism and romanticism in Kuwaiti short stories and highlights the emergence of new creative approaches.
