MANUSCRIPT COPIES OF NASIR AL-MUTARRIZI’S “RISALATUN FI AN-NAHW” PRESERVED IN THE NATIONAL LIBRARY OF FRANCE: A TEXTOLOGICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL ANALYSIS

Azimjon K. Rakhmonov ,

Abstract

This article presents a comparative analysis of three manuscript copies of Nasir al-Mutarrizi’s treatise Risalatun fi an-Nahw, preserved in the National Library of France under the inventory numbers Arabe 4254, Arabe 5875, and Arabe 6664. The study is conducted from the perspectives of textual criticism and manuscript studies. During the research process, the structural features of the manuscripts, writing characteristics, terminological system, and textual variations were examined. The results demonstrate that the text of the treatise has not been preserved in a fixed form but has undergone certain editorial modifications over time. The oldest manuscript, inventory number 6664, appears to be closest to the original version of the text; manuscript no. 5875 represents a more systematized scholarly version, while manuscript no. 4254 reflects a simplified instructional version. The study makes it possible to reconstruct al-Mutarrizi’s scholarly approach to the science of Arabic grammar (nahw) and to trace the development of his grammatical views.
