This article is devoted to the study of the relationship between the artistic character and the historical prototype in Kenesbay Karimov's historical novel "Dervish". The study provides a comprehensive analysis of the socio-ethnographic life of the Karakalpaks in the Aral Sea region and the Khiva Khanate during the second half of the 19th century, as well as the artistic image and prototypical traits of Molla Isaq (Isaq Chagatai) from Kungrad, who accompanied the renowned Hungarian scholar Arminius Vámbéry. Based on the novel's plot, the artistic and aesthetic functions of historical sources, toponyms, folklore elements, and the protagonist's own poems are revealed.
