This article presents a psychological and theoretical analysis of cohabitation without legal marriage (civil unions, de facto families) in modern society. It explores the key factors contributing to the formation of such relationships, including the prioritization of personal freedom, declining trust in the institution of marriage, economic difficulties, and shifting cultural-moral values. The discussion is framed within the context of psychological theories such as Erikson’s psychosocial development theory, Bowlby’s attachment theory, and Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, revealing issues of instability, insecurity, and emotional well-being in unmarried partnerships. The author seeks to explain the phenomenon using a combination of psychological, sociological, and individual-level approaches.
